The trail runner beating anxiety through trail running

MEET BRENDEN, A LEVEL 4
MEMBER OF FLOCK

Each week, we are shining a light on one of the brilliant people who make up FLOCK. Our members come from all walks of life, with different backgrounds, goals, and levels of experience, and that is exactly what makes this trail running community so special.

Tell us your name and a little about yourself?

Hi, I’m Brenden, a 53-year-old single dad to a 14-year-old daughter (going on 20!). I’m originally from South Africa but have been living in the UK for many years. I run two businesses (Little Monster Taproom & Restaurant), so life is pretty full on.

I’ve also dealt with panic attacks and anxiety since I was 16, linked to my time in the army and experiencing some traumatic events.   Exercise, especially running, has always been my way of coping. It keeps me grounded, focused, and helps me through the tougher days.

How long have you been trail running with us?

Just over 7 weeks now. I heard about FLOCK through another running club.

What is your running background?

I’ve been running on and off since school, but consistently for the past 10 years. It’s always been road running,  trail running was completely new to me before FLOCK.

How did you feel before your first FLOCK run?

Excited more than anything, keen to meet new people with similar interests.

What has been your biggest challenge so far in your running journey?

Managing anxiety. When you’ve experienced panic attacks, there’s always that thought in the back of your mind, “what if something happens out here?”. That’s one of the reasons I value running with a group. It gives me reassurance and helps me push through those moments.

Also, slowing my pace down too, it’s so different to road running, I need to manage that better.

What are you most proud of since joining FLOCK?

The distances. I was used to 5–10K on the road, and now I’m comfortably running 14–15K on the trails. It’s been a big step forward, especially with my goal of completing an ultra marathon.

How has your confidence changed over time on the trails?

It’s been a bit up and down recently with some knee pain, but overall it hasn’t taken away from how much I’m enjoying trail running. If anything, it’s made me more determined.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of our trail running community?

The people, the outdoors, and the variety of routes. We’re lucky to run in such a beautiful part of the country, and everyone is so friendly and supportive, it’s a great community to be part of.

Do you have a favourite trail running memory, route, or moment?

Honestly, every run has been memorable, each one challenging and rewarding in its own way. The variety has been brilliant. Massive shoutout to Sam for organising it all.

Exercise, especially running, has always been my way of coping. It keeps me grounded, focused, and helps me through the tougher days.
