MEET KAREN, A LEVEL 4 MEMBER OF FLOCK
Each week, we are shining a light on one of the brilliant people who make up FLOCK. Our members come from all walks of life, with different backgrounds, goals, and levels of experience, and that is exactly what makes this trail running community so special.
Tell us your name and a little about yourself?
Hello! I’m Karen, a Level 4 FLOCK member, with a love of the outdoors and being in nature. I’m technically a city girl, born in London, but spend most of my time now near Arundel. I get out into the Downs most weekends – hiking, trail running or the occasional biking. Exercising outdoors helps my brain switch off & my body relax – and it’s free!
How long have you been trail running with us?
I joined in October 2025 so have seen the trails transform through the seasons
What is your running background?
I started running regularly 5 years ago, initially to get fit for my 50th. I progressed from 5 & 10k events to half marathons. Trails suit me better than road – I like the variety of terrain and route – it’s easier to self motivate when you literally don’t know what’s around the corner. Plus I prefer running for fun & enjoyment, not for pace & distance.
What has been your biggest challenge so far in your running journey?
My biggest personal challenge continues to be self doubt. Even though my strava app and event medals are proof of all the distances run and events completed, my head still tells me otherwise. It’s very annoying!
What are you most proud of since joining FLOCK?
I’m proud of my consistency, showing up most weekends come rain or shine. A long trail run puts me on a high for the rest of the day, and so worth the early start.
How has your confidence changed over time on the trails?
My personal self confidence has increased so much since joining. Life had got a bit narrow after years of running a business & raising a family. I thrive on meeting new people & being part of a group, so having the courage to join FLOCK has paid off. Everyone I’ve met so far are so friendly, supportive, and interesting to chat to.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of our trail running community?
I really enjoy the sense of connection with other like-minded people, and the feeling of being part of a team. I was never sporty or athletic growing up, nor encouraged to exercise. Taking up running in later life was a good thing but a bit lonely, even when I ran in an events with 100s of others. Being part of the FLOCK community feels good.
Do you have a favourite trail running memory, route, or moment?
My first FLOCK trail, a beautiful sunny autumnal 12k, will always stand out in my mind for two reasons. Firstly for the warm welcome and support from Sam and the stalwarts Dirk, Mario & Kath who put me instantly at ease. And secondly for making the rookie error of chatting (nervously) too much up the first hill – only to completely run out of puff & needing rescuing with an emergency energy block. Oops!
I’m proud of my consistency, showing up most weekends come rain or shine.
